ASK WYATT
Do I Really Need a Pool Heater in Southwest Florida?
"We have great weather in Naples, but that doesn't mean the pool is always warm."
Wyatt's Quick Answer
You don’t necessarily need a pool heater in Southwest Florida, but I think it’s worth considering if you want to use your pool comfortably throughout more of the year.
The water can feel pretty cool during the winter months, especially when temperatures drop at night.
For some homeowners, that’s not a big deal. For others, having a comfortable pool temperature means they’ll actually use the pool more often.
Wyatt’s Tip
Think about when you want to use your pool—not just how warm Naples usually is.
If you’re planning to swim year-round, entertain during the cooler months, or simply want the option of warming the water when you want to use it, a heater can be a very worthwhile addition.
The Full Answer From Wyatt
I get this question quite a bit because people move to Southwest Florida expecting the pool to be warm all year.
And I understand why.
We have beautiful weather here, but there are still plenty of days when the air temperature is comfortable and the pool water feels a little too cold.
So do you actually need a heater?
It really depends on how you plan to use your pool.
If you’re someone who only swims when it’s hot outside, you may decide you don’t need one. But if you want to get more use out of your pool throughout the year, I think it’s something worth considering during the design process.
Think About Your Lifestyle
The biggest question I’d ask is simple:
When do you want to swim?
If you’re building a pool because you want a place to relax after work, spend time with your family, or entertain friends, you probably don’t want the water temperature to determine whether you can enjoy it.
A heater gives you more control.
Instead of hoping the water is comfortable, you have the option to warm it when you need to.
Winter Is When You’ll Notice It
Southwest Florida winters are obviously different from winters up north, but the water can still get surprisingly cool.
That’s especially noticeable when you have a stretch of cooler weather.
The pool might look perfect. The sun might be shining. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the water feels warm when you get in.
That’s when homeowners who chose to include a heater often appreciate having it.
It’s About Using the Pool More
This is how I look at most pool features.
I don’t want homeowners adding something just because it’s available.
I want them to think about whether it will actually improve the way they use their backyard.
If having a heater means your family uses the pool more often, or you can comfortably plan a gathering during a cooler month, then it may be a worthwhile investment.
That’s a much better reason to add one than simply saying, “Everyone gets a heater.”
Every homeowner has different priorities.
When we’re designing a pool, I’ll talk through those priorities with you and help you decide what makes sense for the way you actually plan to live with the pool.
That’s what the design process should be about—building a backyard you’ll actually use.
